Green Amethyst is a green-colored form of natural, mined quartz produced by heat-treating amethyst. This gemological enhancement elicits their leek green color, as well as the nickname ‘green amethyst’. Since 1950, almost all has come from one small mine in Brazil.
Other names used for this stone are Vermarine or Prasiolite. While many in the gem trade prefers the name Prasiolite, we do not use the names interchangably because we feel that you should know what you are buying and that Prasiolite is better used for the natural form of green quartz. “Prase”, the generic name for green quartz, and “Prasiolite”, are stones that come out of the ground a natural leek green color. Green Amethyst came out of the ground in the varying shades of Amethyst and while indeed a natural mined stone, it was made green, hence Green Amethyst.
