Independence Day, celebrated on the 4th of July kicks of the month with a bang….literally for those who celebrated with fireworks! I am still feeling the affects of the enormous amount of food I ate as we enjoyed time with friends and family celebrating our country and the freedom we have. This week we are going to be talking about the birthstone for the month of July which is the Ruby. We will look into the history of the Ruby, what that stone represents to some, and what classification it is and how it cut. We will also look into another stone that is considered to be an alternative birthstone for the month of July and of course we will showcase some of these birthstones that Gilbert and Frech has available for purchase. First though, we need to talk about the history of the birthstone and why we choose to have them.
The birthstone is a gem that is specifically chosen for each month. They can be either a semi-precious or precious stone. Some choose to believe that these stones seem to be the most powerful with “luck or healing” during their particular month. There are several classifications of birthstones or lists that have been developed over the years. The first would be the Modern Birthstone. This list is created from what is deemed as the official birthstone by the American National Association of Jewelers, Jewelers of America. This became the accepted list in the US and was adopted in 1912. The next classification would be the Traditional Birthstone list. This can be a combination of some of the modern birthstones and older stones dating back to the 15th century. These stones represented society’s traditions during their time. Jewelers tend to have different lists of traditional birthstones but the colors represented are the same. Another classification would be Mystical birthstones. Its origin is over a thousand years old and is of the country of Tibet. The Ayurvedic Birthstone list is from Indian medicine that has been used for over a thousand years. Last but not least is the column created for the other birthstone list. This was created as an alternative to the traditional and modern birthstones used.
Tomorrow we are going to get to know the ruby in a detailed way! Join me as we delve into the history and origin of this stone. I look forward to it.
